Cutting Costs - How to Save Money on Your Crafting Supplies by Lorna Findlay

Crafting is a fun and rewarding hobby for many adults and children alike. However, if you are an avid crafter, then you probably already know just how pricey crafting supplies can be. You can sell your crafts at fairs and shows, or even online, in order to support your hobby, but if you'd rather not mix business with pleasure, there are a number of other ways you can save money on your crafting supplies as well.

Obviously, the best way to save money on crafting supplies is to visit your local craft store during a sale. When you shop at a store regularly, ask if they have newsletters or other mailings to alert you of upcoming sales and sign up. If you want to get the best products, you need to shop at a sale on the first day. Otherwise, the items you want might be gone. Hot times for sales are after holidays and seasons, but if you craft a lot, stock up for next year by buying seasonal items when they go on sale.

Another great way to save money is to buy in bulk. If there is a certain kind of craft that you love to do, you should buy lots of the same item at a time. When you buy in bulk, the store or manufacturer may be able to give you a discount. You can also ask what you have to do to qualify for wholesale prices. If you run a crafting business, you might be able to save in that way as well.

Shopping online is a great time for thrifty crafters. Here, you can buy directly from a manufacturer, so the prices are cheaper than at your local craft store. You can also take advantage of special online savings, as well as visit auction websites to bid on items for less expensive prices. Remember that whenever you buy something online, you'll have to pay for shipping, but generally you can still save money this way.

Lastly, look for crafting supplies that don't cost anything. There are great books and magazine articles that can help you find ideas for making crafts with recycled objects, like milk cartons, tissue boxes, and greeting cards. Crafting doesn't have to be expensive to be fun! Use a little creativity, and you will find that crafting is a fairly cheap hobby, especially when compared to activities such as building models or working on cars.
