Up Close and Personal in the Galapagos Islands
by Enid Glasgow
The Galapagos Islands are hardly the most accessible destinations in the world, so why do thousands of visitors flock there each year? It could be the miles of gorgeous sandy beaches surrounded by some of the most stunningly blue water in the world, but most visitors come for the tremendous diversity of wildlife that is found only in the Galapagos. The Islands feature a stunning array of endemic species that have made the Galapagos a sought-after locale for researchers and visitors alike. It is an experience like no other.
Where else but the Galapagos Islands can you witness the wonder of a 300-pound tortoise lumbering on thick prehistoric legs and a magnificent red-breasted frigate bird soaring through the air? The Galapagos Islands is home to an impressive number of species, and of particular interest are those that are endemic, or native, to the area. The Galapagos is the only place in the world, for instance, where you will find warm-water penguins. Galapagos penguins are the only species of this great bird that live in the northern hemisphere, able to live in waters whose temperature ranges from 59° F to 82°F. This is just one example of the mysteries and wonders that live and thrive on the Islands.
What makes the animals of the Galapagos Islands even more extraordinary is that you can literally get up close and personal with them. They live in a very insular world, and they have no fear of humans. The Galapagos is a natural treasure, and the impact of the modern world could well destroy the beautiful flora and fauna of the area. To preserve the delicate balance of life here, you may visit the Islands' major attractions only when accompanied by a naturalist guide. You must stay on marked trails so as not to trample plants or stress animals. But this does not hinder your ability to see and experience the Galapagos to the fullest. The animals are so tame that they routinely come and sit on tourist trails. They do not have an inborn fear of people, and this makes them all the more endearing - and all the more worthy of our protection.
Seeing the marvelous sea lions, fur sea lions, marine and land iguanas, Galapagos and hammerhead shark (though encountering these in the water may not be a highlight of your trip!), pelicans, dolphins, crabs, penguins, and an endless variety of exotic birds makes every trip to the Galapagos the trip of a lifetime.
